Philosophical discussions in the coffee houses of early-modern London were fuelled by the proceeds of slavery. Indeed, as historian Chris Harman argues:

Philosophers might talk about equal rights in the coffee houses of Europe. But the sweetened coffee they drank was produced by people who had been herded at gunpoint onto ships in West Africa, taken across the Atlantic in appalling conditions (more than one in ten died on the way), sold at auctions and then whipped into working 15, 16 or even 18 hours a day until they died432.
